Choosing a Gate for a Residential Fence

The white picket fence speaks to the ideal American home. A fence can make a property look more attractive, but it’s necessary to consider the gate accompanying it. Gate designs vary widely, and it can be overwhelming to pick the right one. When looking to narrow down the choices, these ideas on gate designs will help with decision-making.

Standard gates

The standard gate is a single-door gate designed to allow people to pass through and should be constructed in the same style and material as the fence. For example, if the property is surrounded by a board-on-board privacy fence, the gate should follow the same pattern.

The height of the gate and the fence should match. A gate that’s too short or too tall will look odd. Homeowners can stabilize gates using a turnbuckle or a piece of lumber to keep them from sagging and warping.

A gate’s latching system is also integral and needs strategic placement. Ideally, it should be placed high enough so that children can’t reach it and low enough so that people can’t easily unlatch it by reaching over the gate.

Specialty gates

A specialty gate is typically a different type of gate from the one found on a standard fence. It’s usually automated, but this doesn’t always have to be the case.

Swing gates

A swing gate opens inwards or outwards and is typically constructed with a single or double door. This type of gate is usually less expensive than other specialty gates and installs quickly and easily. However, if there is limited space or high traffic flow at the home entrance, a sliding gate might be better than a swing gate.

Cantilever and rolling gates

The cantilever gate slides open on a counterbalance system. Its rollers are at the top of the fence. Meanwhile, a rolling gate is an entryway that slides open on a track embedded in the ground. Its wheels support it as it moves.

Gate panels are heavy so these entryways are often automated. Cantilever gates are ideal for areas with frequent snow and ice that might obstruct a ground track.

Double gates

It’s not uncommon to have multiple gates in a fence. A double gate is ideal for people who regularly need access to more oversized items, such as yard equipment. Although double gates can come in various widths, it’s important to remember that a wider gate will be heavier and more challenging to maneuver.

Safety and security

Gates and fences can be decorative elements in the yard, but their primary purpose is to keep people safe. Security and safety are the main priorities, especially if there is a pool or pond.

A seasoned professional

When choosing a gate, work with a skilled gate and fence installer to ensure that it’s installed correctly. Proper equipment and expertise are essential when putting in a new gate.
