Choosing the Best Fencing for Home Security

Home security shouldn't stop at the yard. Custom fences are a great way to add aesthetic value to a home while keeping the perimeter of a home safe. Unfortunately, many homeowners don't give much thought to safety features when installing a fence and often go with what looks best. Security and style go together in choosing the best fence for defense.

The taller, the better

Some HOAs have limits on perimeter fence height, but consider the tallest fence you can to keep the property secure. The most effective fences are at least eight or nine feet tall and make it very hard for someone to climb over. This means minimal horizontal railings or bars and spikes or points at the top.

Consider going see-through

A fence that provides places for someone to hide is less safe than one you can see right through. The goal is to have a formidable fence to climb and one that you can see what's on the other side. Metal perimeter fences that are easy to see-through can look lovely around a yard and keep potential intruders on the outside of your yard.

Install a fence that is hard to bypass

As we mentioned earlier, the ease of access a fence provides is the difference between someone getting onto a property or not. Things to consider when making a fence secure: concrete-footing, fencing materials and inability to cut through it, and security gates.

To safely secure a fence into the ground, do so with concrete along the fence's entire length. While concrete footing can be expensive, it's worth it to secure all fence posts in concrete for stability and make it harder to bypass below the fence. Metal security fences are a prime example of a fence that is stylish and easy to maintain. Standard bolt cutters can't cut through this material, unlike a chain-link fence that's easy to cut. Some of the best materials to make fences the most secure are vinyl, metal, and wire-mesh fencing.

Lastly, the gate is the entryway to the yard. If you have a heavy-duty fence and lousy gate security, unwelcome guests can walk right onto your property. Padlock the gates and make the fence panel security match the rest of your fencing.

It's perfectly acceptable to get creative with your fencing at home and be a fun design project. However, beauty should never overshadow the need for security. By taking into consideration the tips above, you won't have to forego beauty for home protection.
