Considerations Before Adding an RV Gate
If you own an RV, you may be paying hefty storage fees or giving up valuable garage real estate to store it. If either of these is correct, you may be considering adding an RV gate to your property. With the addition of a gate, an RV or boat can be safely tucked into the back yard for storage.
Privacy
Privacy is nearly always a crucial element for an RV gate. While it may not be necessary, it’s much easier to install a privacy gate from the beginning than it is to have to modify or change the gate following complaints from the neighbors. It’s also a safer option. Sometimes, just having an RV that is highly visible will bring on a break-in by kids or a vagrant. While they may mean no real harm, it isn’t something a homeowner wants to encourage or be legally responsible for if an injury occurs.
HOA and city codes
While having your RV on your property without needing to park the second car on the driveway sounds ideal, it isn’t without problems: in some planned communities, homeowners aren’t allowed to have an RV in their backyard. It would be crushing to spend the time and money to add a gate, only to discover it’s a violation of HOA regulations.
There is also always the possibility that an RV, which is acceptable to park in the backyard may not be legal to park their next year if your city changes the rules. Cities change regulations as public opinion changes, or as special interest groups lean on them for changes.
Access
Access means more than enough access in the fence facing, and enough space behind the fence to store the RV. It’s also the landscaping an RV will have to navigate. If a hedge or part of a neighbor’s tree blocks the RV from going through, if there are irrigation, water, or sewer pipes that might be damaged, or if the lawn will take a beating, these need to be resolved.
Some homeowners will prefer having a slab to park the RV on when it’s being stored. That’s an additional expense that needs to be computed into the cost.
Gate style
The type of gate a homeowner wants will depend on the amount of space available, and, again, if landscape features will be compromised. Many kinds of rolling and swinging gates, both single and double, will give the homeowner some leeway if any of these will work in their situation.
