Is Fencing a Pool Worth the Investment

Pools are fun, but they can also be dangerous. Any pool owner living with people who don’t know how to swim, especially children, should consider fencing it to avoid potential injuries. However, accidents happen even with strong swimmers. Fencing adds a necessary layer of security and eliminates reasons to worry. After all, pool time is all about relaxing.

Animal safety

Animals—both pets and wildlife—are at risk of falling into an unfenced pool. This often leads to severe consequences for the pool owners and may result in injury or death to the animal involved.

Improved privacy

Safety is an obvious advantage of pool fencing, but there are more reasons in favor of it. A fence adds privacy to the pool, concealing it from the prying eyes of neighbors and passers-by. Even if the pool owner isn’t bothered about someone seeing them in a bathing suit, houseguests may be. It’s worth making sure that everyone using the pool has a worry-free time.

Design element

Apart from being a safety and privacy measure, pool fencing is also a way of updating a home’s exterior. Fencing is flexible in many designs and comes in a wide range of materials, styles, and colors. There’s no need to sacrifice the look of your garden to create a safe swimming place.

Insurance benefits

Some pool owners may save on insurance by investing in pool fencing, although this depends on the insurance company's policies. Generally, if pool fencing complies with the CPSC (U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission) guidelines, you may qualify for an insurance discount. It makes perfect sense, as fencing significantly reduces the chances of an accident.

Legal requirements

In Arizona, pool fencing is a legal requirement. Public Health and Safety § 36-1681 regulations state that “Body of water that contains water eighteen inches or more in depth at any point and that is wider than eight feet at any point and is intended for swimming, shall be protected by an enclosure surrounding the pool area.” In other words, a small pool doesn’t require fencing, though it’s still beneficial for many reasons. But any pool equal to or exceeding the measurements listed above must feature an enclosure for safety reasons.

In accordance with the Public Health and Safety regulations, large pools in Arizona should be enclosed by a fence at least five feet tall. The fence can’t feature openings over four inches in diameter. The gates and latches also have certain guidelines outlined in the statute.
