What to Consider Before Choosing a Fence Material

The process of selecting fencing is an exciting one for homeowners. A fence is a substantial investment for a property owner, and it's reasonable to want the fencing to fulfill the wishes of the property owner and meet the individual needs of the inhabitants. During the selection process, there are some factors to take into consideration. Here, we discuss what a homeowner should keep in mind during the fence selection process.

Do I need privacy?

Chain link makes an excellent security fence, but it’s at the cost of privacy.

Some fences, such as wood or vinyl, offer excellent privacy for both the property owner and those on the other side. Chain link or wrought iron provide much less privacy unless they are modified in some way.

Do I need security?

Security honestly depends on who or what the homeowner is trying to protect. Metal, such as chain link or aluminum, make a high-security fence. These can be installed at the cost of privacy.

How much maintenance will the fence require?

Knowing maintenance requirements before installing a fence offers a homeowner the opportunity for long term planning. Some fences, such as those made of wood, have higher maintenance requirements than others and knowing that gives the homeowner a chance to consider other options if they don't want to fuss with maintenance.

Does this fence meet my needs?

If a homeowner is putting a fence around an HVAC unit or pool equipment to attempt to keep the noise level down, that will require completely different fencing than one that is designed to keep children and pets secure. A fence, regardless of how beautiful or well made it is, that doesn't meet the most basic needs of the homeowner just isn't going to work.

A fence should be designed with the location of the property in mind. So, for example, if the home is close to a noisy school or highway, a chain link fence will not help muffle the sound at all.

Curb appeal

While some fencing offers more curb appeal than others, the fencing of other homes in the neighborhood is also a worthy consideration. No one wants their home to look out of place in the community, so fencing material, while it doesn't have to be precisely the same, should be altruistically considered during the design phase of the fence project.
